What parents want when choosing a school

Aug 29, 2025 | Christian Education

Did you know that 67% of parents start thinking about school options at least two years before their child begins? And for 23% of parents, that journey starts even before the birth of their child!

At Highlands, we know that choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a family can make. The 2025 ISQ What Parents Want survey offers invaluable insights into what truly matters to families across Queensland. Here’s a snapshot of what parents value the most, and why Highlands could be the right school for your child:

Independent schools remain a strong first choice

44% of parents considered only independent schools, like Highlands, while around 34% explored all three sectors (Independent, State, Catholic). This reflects growing numbers of families seeking values-aligned schooling and a learning environment grounded in clarity, consistency, and respect for traditional values.

First impressions matter

73% of parents said the appearance of a school and its facilities highly influenced their decision. Highlands’ modern, dynamic Campus – from our state‑of‑the‑art library and science labs to our dedicated music and dance studios and multi‑purpose centre – provides an inspiring environment that’s designed to support every child’s unique interests and growth.

Students’ voices matter

Over 54% of parents report that their child’s opinion played a strong role in selecting a school. At Highlands, students thrive in an environment built on faith, creativity, care, and connection. Every student is known by name and reminded that they matter to us, and to God. It’s a place where young people feel safe, supported, and proud to belong.

Top reasons for choosing independent schools

Parents consistently identify these as the most important factors in school choice:

  1. Preparing students to fulfil their potential
  2. High quality teachers
  3. School meeting individual needs
  4. Reputation
  5. Encouraging responsibility in schoolwork
  6. Good discipline
  7. Strong community focus
  8. Thoughtful teaching philosophy
  9. Variety of subjects
  10. Prospects for school leavers

These findings highlight what matters most to parents: early engagement, thoughtful environments, student-centred learning, and values-driven education. At Highlands Christian College, we’re proud to embody these strengths. With small class sizes, carefully chosen Christian educators, a strong foundation in holistic Christian values, and a diverse curriculum, Highlands delivers the school experience families consistently prioritise.
