Will my child make friends at Highlands?

Sep 26, 2025 | Christian Education, Student Wellbeing

It’s a question many parents (and kids) wonder, especially in the lead-up to a new school year:

Will my child make friends?
Will they feel like they belong?

At Highlands Christian College, we believe the answer is a confident yes – not by chance, but by design. Community and relationships are at the heart of everything we do.

What the research says

A recent study from Flinders University looked into when and where students feel most lonely at school, and the results were eye-opening.

It turns out that loneliness doesn’t come from being physically alone, but from being surrounded by people who don’t include you, see you, or understand you. It’s not about numbers, it’s about connection.

Students feel most isolated when they’re with others who don’t make them feel safe or welcome.

So what actually helps?

Safe, welcoming spaces. Environments where students are intentionally included and cared for — where friendships can grow naturally. Smaller groups, familiar faces, and a strong sense of community all make a big difference.

How we create spaces for friendships to flourish

At Highlands, friendship and belonging aren’t left to chance – we build them in from day one.

We know every student by name.
From Prep to Year 12, our whole-College structure means that students are known personally. That familiarity creates security and confidence, especially for new students finding their feet.

We build in opportunities to connect – outside the classroom too.
School isn’t just about lessons and lunch breaks. We host regular events designed to bring students and families together: picnics, barbecues, boys-only and girls-only events, parent catch-ups, and more. These aren’t just fun, they’re friendship-building.

We foster a culture of inclusion and care.
In classrooms, in the playground, and everywhere in between, our teachers and staff are intentional about creating a culture where students look out for each other. We encourage kindness, celebrate individuality, and step in early when someone seems left out.

We keep things small where it counts.
Smaller class sizes and consistent relationships make it easier for students to connect with their teachers and with each other. Whether it’s through group work, mentoring, or lunchtime clubs, we create spaces where students can feel safe to be themselves.

Why it matters

Friendship isn’t just about having someone to play with at lunch – it’s about feeling seen, valued, and secure.

When students feel disconnected or excluded, it can affect everything – their confidence, their learning, even their mental health. But when they feel like they belong, they thrive.

That’s why we take connection seriously at Highlands. It’s not an extra. It’s essential.
